About Baltimore MD

Founded in 1729, Baltimore is a historical city that is the second largest seaport in the Mid-Atlantic. The city has the unique distinction as the largest independent city in the United States, since it does not belong to any county. Moreover, it boasts the largest number of public monuments than any other city per capita in the United States. It's Inner Harbor was once the second-leading port of entry for immigrants entering the United States, which spawned hundreds of unique districts and communities throughout the city; Baltimore has since been dubbed "a city of neighborhoods" because of this. Today, the city has an estimated population of 621,849 individuals in 2015, though the metropolitan area has a population of 2.7 million residents. While it is no longer a major manufacturing city, Baltimore has evolved to a service-oriented economy with a focus on jobs in the science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields. In fact, nearly a quarter of all jobs in Baltimore are in these fields, and Johns Hopkins University & Johns Hopkins Hospital  are the city's top two employers. Baltimore International College and Loyola University Maryland are other leading education institutions in the metropolitan area.

Baltimore is home to the annual Maryland Tech Council Bio+Tech Conference—a convergence of life science and technology. This event brings more than 500 professionals together to meet and network, with the goal of creating partnerships that lead to new discoveries.
